Are you wondering what to expect at your prenatal ultrasound appointment? Or maybe you’re not sure if you need an ultrasound. Before making a pregnancy decision, ultrasounds are an important step in the pregnancy confirmation process.

Without an ultrasound, you will not be able to confirm vital pregnancy details. Safeguard your health with a free, limited obstetrical ultrasound at Resources for Women today.

The Ultrasound Process

During a prenatal ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves create images on a screen. A transducer sends sound waves that bounce off structures inside the body, including your pregnancy and reproductive organs.

No radiation is involved during an ultrasound.

Two Types of Ultrasounds

There are two types of prenatal ultrasounds: transvaginal ultrasounds and abdominal ultrasounds.

A transvaginal ultrasound involves a wand-like device being placed inside the vagina. You may feel mild discomfort during the ultrasound as the device is inserted.

An abdominal ultrasound is completed by moving a device over your belly.

Why Ultrasounds Matter

Ultrasounds are imperative for progressing with a pregnancy decision and understanding your unique pregnancy. An ultrasound confirms three details of pregnancy, including:

1. Viability (whether your pregnancy has a heartbeat and is progressing)
2. Pregnancy location (if it’s growing within the uterus)
3. How far along you are (gestational age)

Ultrasounds help physicians rule out any possible complications or abnormalities. Possible complications could include a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (where the pregnancy grows outside the uterus).

Free Limited Ultrasound

Ultrasounds at Resources for Women are performed by a Registered Nurse (RN) trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound or a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). To qualify for an ultrasound, you will need an initial pregnancy test and consultation.
