What Would Adoption Look Like For Me?

You may already have ideas of what adoption looks like. You may have a family or friend who was adopted, or you may have seen adoption portrayed in movies, books, or TV.

It’s important to remember that films often portray adoption negatively. You may feel that you’re “abandoning a child” or that birth mothers don’t care about the children they place for adoption. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Adoption is a loving choice that provides your child with the brightest future possible. And as the expectant woman or birth mother, you’re in control. The entire process is about advocating for your needs. You can select the adoptive family you want to raise your child.

Types of Adoption

Choose an adoption plan that works for you. Here are the three types of adoption plans:

  1. Open Adoption: Create a lasting relationship with the adoptive family and child. You can have regular contact through letters, phone calls, visits, and more. Your child will know who you are and your role in their life.
  2. Semi-Open Adoption: Semi-open adoptions aren’t as common, but they could still be an option for you. With this adoption, you’ll have contact with the adoptive family and your child. However, all contact is mediated through a third party, such as an adoption attorney or agency.
  3. Closed Adoption: Closed adoptions offer the highest levels of privacy. With this adoption plan, all identifying records are sealed, so you and the adoptive family won’t know each other.

Can I Really Parent?

Parenting could seem like the most challenging option as it comes with much responsibility, but you could be surprised how naturally parenting comes to you. You probably have lots of questions, including:

  • How will I support a child financially?
  • Who will support me emotionally and physically?
  • Can I stay in school or continue working if I am a parent?
  • What if my partner doesn’t agree to parent with me?

It’s easy to disqualify yourself when faced with an unexpected pregnancy, but every pregnancy decision has its difficulties. You are not alone. We offer free parenting resources and support that can help equip you to parent well.
